A Closer Look at MYDC Youth Programs

At Manchester Youth Development Center (MYDC), our youth programs are built on one simple belief: when young people are supported consistently, surrounded by caring adults, and given space to grow, they thrive.

For 58 years, MYDC Youth Programs have served children and families on Pittsburgh’s Northside with activities that are thoughtful, relationship-driven, and rooted in community. From early childhood through middle school, we focus on whole-child development, supporting young people socially, emotionally, and academically while partnering closely with families every step of the way.

Whether you’re looking for a nurturing early learning environment or dependable after-school support, MYDC offers programs families trust and kids look forward to.

MYDC Afterschool Program (Grades K–5)

The hours after school matter. Kids need a place where they can unwind, get support with schoolwork, connect with friends, and feel safe being themselves.

Our Afterschool Program serves students in kindergarten through 5th grade and offers a balanced afternoon experience that includes:

  • Homework support and academic enrichment
  • Organized games and physical activity that encourage teamwork and movement
  • Creative and hands-on enrichment activities
  • A safe, structured environment led by trusted, consistent staff

Each afternoon is intentionally designed to include time to learn, time to play, and time to connect. Students build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop skills that carry into the classroom and everyday life.

Camp CHOICE: Future Leaders Summer Program (Rising 1st–8th Grade)

Summer at MYDC is anything but a pause button.

Camp CHOICE keeps young people engaged, active, and learning throughout the summer in ways that are exciting and meaningful. Designed for rising 1st through 8th graders, the program blends fun with purpose through:

  • STEM activities and hands-on projects
  • Sports, games, and physical fitness
  • Visual arts and creative expression
  • Weekly field trips throughout Pittsburgh region

Camp CHOICE helps youth build independence, problem-solving skills, and confidence—while still having a whole lot of fun. They return to school in the fall not just refreshed, but ready.

Training Wheels Childcare Center (Ages 3–5)

Training Wheels has been serving Pittsburgh’s youngest learners since 1979, offering a high-quality early childhood experience rooted in care, consistency, and trust. As a Pre-K Counts program, Training Wheels focuses on preparing children for kindergarten and for life.

What families value most about Training Wheels:

  • A whole-child approach that supports social, emotional, physical, and academic growth
  • Predictable routines balanced with imaginative, play-based learning
  • Caring, experienced educators who honor each child’s individuality
  • Strong partnerships with parents and caregivers

Choosing early childhood care is a big decision. At Training Wheels, families find a program built on long-standing relationships, open communication, and genuine care for both children and their caregivers.

Why Families Choose MYDC

Since 1968, MYDC has supported thousands of children and families. Our work is is a commitment to our community. Many of our staff are community members and quite a few were once MYDC kids themselves.

We’re not just providing programs.
We’re building relationships, investing in young people, and walking alongside families as their children grow.

That’s what MYDC has always been about… and always will be.
